Lucent - Letter to Retirees Regarding Union Affiliation

1/28/2004

To: All Lucent Retirees:

A letter was recently sent to all of the Lucent retirees who were formerly represented by the Union. The letter was sent by the “Lucent Benefit and Equity Operations”. The letter states that Lucent is trying to “get organized” and would like the retiree to identify what Union or Local the retiree was affiliated with when they retired.

CWA was never informed about this letter until after it was sent, and we do not see a need for it. Both Bob Richhart and myself have asked for a logical explanation as to the necessity of it. True to form, Lucent has been unable to provide an answer that makes sense.

It is my belief Lucent is gathering information relative to bargaining later this year in an attempt to divide the Unions. I am requesting you to trash, dump or throw out this useless request from the Company. Our retirees’ time shouldn’t be wasted by the Company on frivolous matters. We will have far more serious things to take care of as we get closer to bargaining.

In Unity,

Mary Jo Sherman
CWA Representative
